The casino downstairs: the facts a hotel guest needs

The Star Grand Hotel shares its building with the casino of The Star Sydney. You do not have to go in. If you do, these are the rules that apply to everyone, hotel guests included.

Who can enter

Guests must be aged 18 or over to enter the casino. Before entry you may be asked for acceptable proof of age under the Casino Control Regulation 2019. The Star may keep identification it suspects to be forged or tampered with. People who are excluded must not enter.

Hours

The Star describes the complex as open 24/7, including the gaming floor. The hotel's own page adds a caution: delays may occur for all guests, including hotel guests, at the casino entrance during peak times.

What to wear and what to leave behind

By day

The dress standard is simple: neat and tidy at all times. Refused: sleeveless tops for men, ripped, torn or soiled clothing (designer rips are accepted), dirty work wear, face paint or disguises, and clothing or tattoos that are offensive or linked to criminal groups.

That rules out coming straight from the pool, which is worth knowing if your plan is a swim and then dinner on the gaming floor.

By night

Not allowed inside: weapons, two-way radios, food and drink brought in, prams, cameras and other image-capturing equipment, flags on poles, large umbrellas, and bags bigger than airline carry-on size (56 × 36 × 23 cm).

You may not take photos or film. The casino uses audio recording and CCTV, can inspect bags and run metal detection, and says it uses mobile device tracking software.

Cards and cash

The operator's casino page says you need a card to take part in gaming: either membership of The Star Club or a Player Card. It promotes cashless gaming and points to an update on how it pays out monetary amounts. Player Activity Statements are available on request from the Guest Service Desk, through The Star App or on The Star's website. We mention this only so it does not surprise you at the door.

The gaming areas, in outline

The operator lists table games and a poker room on its casino pages, and names private gaming rooms called Sovereign, Oasis and Vantage. We do not describe games, odds or offers; the operator publishes its rules of games for anyone who needs them.

The licence, in one paragraph

The Star Pty Limited's casino licence remains suspended. On 25 September 2026 the NSW Independent Casino Commission announced that the Minister had extended the term of the manager, Nick Weeks, to 30 June 2027; he continues to hold the licence, which allows the casino to keep operating its gaming facilities. Our journal note explains what that means for a hotel guest (very little day to day).

Taking a break or asking for help

Self-exclusion from The Star is free. According to GambleAware NSW you can arrange it with a Casino Host at a Guest Service Desk on the main gaming floor or in the Sovereign, Oasis or Vantage rooms, with a Security Officer at any gaming entrance or any staff member, through The Star's Guest Support Managers on 0418 881 420, or with The Star's online voluntary exclusion form. For casinos the minimum period is 12 months.

GambleAware's counsellors are on 1800 858 858, 24/7, free and confidential. The National Gambling Helpline uses the same number. See our responsible gambling page for more.

Dates first, the rest after

This is a request, not a booking. Our desk checks the dates and the rate with the hotel's own reservations or a booking partner and answers by email; nobody asks for card details here. This site is paid a commission by the hotel or its booking partner when a request sent here turns into a confirmed stay. You pay nothing to us. How the money works.

Thank you. The request reached our desk; the reply comes by email, usually within one working day.
