Ratings: what we saw, and what we refuse to make up

Review sites change by the hour, and many block automated reading. So this page only reports what we looked at ourselves, with the date, and says where the gaps are.

Google Maps, 31 October 2026

On 31 October 2026 we captured the Google Maps card for the hotel, which Google titles 'The Star Grand Hotel'. It showed an average of 4.0 out of 5 and the label '5-star hotel'. The number of reviews behind that average was not visible in the view we captured, so we do not print one.

Booking sites

The large booking sites block the kind of reading we do, and their scores depend on who booked through them. We have not copied any score from them, and we will not publish one we have not seen with a date.

Daytime guests tend to judge a hotel like this on the room, the breakfast and the walk outside.

Here the walk is excellent, breakfast has several options from 7am, and the standard rooms are described as newly designed.

By night

Night-time guests judge it on noise, service and what is open at 11pm.

Plenty is open; whether that is a plus depends on your room and on whether you want it.

Awards the hotels list

The Star Grand's page lists no awards. Next door, The Darling lists a 2025 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Best of the Best and Accommodation Australia NSW's Metropolitan Deluxe Hotel of the Year 2025. Inside the complex, Sokyo lists Best Japanese Restaurant at the 2024 Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence, and The Darling Spa lists Best Health Spa & Wellness Experience at the Australian Accommodation Awards 2025.
